Simple Ways to Include Greek Yogurt in Your Diet

What distinguishes Greek yogurt from regular yogurt, you may wonder? Greek yogurt is simply made by straining yogurt to remove the whey (the liquid you find remaining after the milk has curdled). When compared to regular yogurt, this results in a more solid yogurt with less sugar, fewer carbohydrates, and more protein. However, Greek yogurt, like regular yogurt, is a natural source of probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that help regulate your digestive system. Greek yogurt has all of the healthy benefits of yogurt plus an extra punch of protein to help you fill up and feel fuller for longer!

There are numerous ways to incorporate yogurt into your daily diet, including:

  • In recipes, replace sour cream with plain Greek yogurt.

It’s not entirely clear why Greek yogurt is called that. Even though it has only been on grocery store shelves in the United States for the past five years, it appears to have originated centuries ago in the Middle East. Even though it is labeled “Greek,” it does not originate in Greece! It is also referred to as strained yogurt.

When choosing a yogurt, look for one with no more than 20 grams of sugar per serving, one that is low fat or nonfat, and one that contains probiotics in the ingredients list, such as L. B. acidophilus bifidum, also known as L. casei.
